The Cure are an English rock band formed in 1976 (firstly known as The Easy Cure) in Crawley, West Sussex, England.
Robert Smith, guitarist, lead vocalist, and songwriter has remained the constant member throughout the various line-ups since the band’s formation. The band adopted a new style which, together with Robert’s stage look and unique vocals, had a strong influence on the emerging genre of independent music as well as the huge fan base that formed around the band.

The Cure showed their lighter side and introduced a greater pop sensibility into their music. Songs such as The Lovecats (1983), Close To Me (1985), Lovesong (1989), and Friday I’m in Love (1992) took the band high into the Top 40 whilst retaining their individualistic style and quirkiness. The band have released thirteen studio albums, two EPs, over thirty singles, and have sold over 30 million albums worldwide. The band continue to tour extensively across the world with tickets selling out straight away.

The Cure were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.

Paul’s career took off in the late 1970’s initially with a job with London Features International photographing bands at concerts and various locations. One of these was the BBC studios for Top of the Pops, where Paul first encountered The Cure in 1980.

Paul photographed The Cure on many occasions at his studio in Fulham, often starting late in the day and going on very late into the night. These sessions were always busy, creative and incredibly productive and a trusting relationship was established over many years. Paul also went on many location shoots with the band, getting inspiration from Robert and the many interesting surroundings they found themselves in.

“AS THIS BOOK SHOWS, THE ‘LOOK’ OF THE VARIOUS INCARNATIONS OF THE CURE, THROUGH MANY DIFFERENT PERIODS, IS INEXTRICABLY LINKED TO PAUL’S PICTURES; HIS VISION, EXPERTISE AND PATIENCE PLAYED A HUGE PART IN PORTRAYING US, NOT JUST AS WE WANTED TO BE, BUT AS WE REALLY WERE.
AN EXCELLENT PHOTOGRAPHER, AND AN EXCELLENT MAN… AND A VERY GOOD JOB HE WASN’T PUT OFF BY THE VERY WEIRD JOB THAT WAS THE CURE ON TOP OF THE POPS IN 1980!” Robert Smith
